RK-D 3040 CNC HIGH SPEED EDM DRILLING MACHINE

The RK-D 3040 CNC model is the latest in a proven line of affordable small hole EDM drills. Features include a fully integrated multi axis CNC with a Windows operating system, conversational G & M code programming, and Ethernet networking.

The RK-D 3040 control and quick response Z Axis AC Servo motor, along with the standard triplex, three plunger high pressure dielectric pump, combine features that create a system to remove the disintegrated material rapidly, promoting smaller, faster, and deeper drilling possibilities. The built-in microprocessor assures clean entrance holes by approaching the part with low electrode power, then increasing to full power in a three-step sequence. This produces a small controlled initial spark, reducing burrs and work surface scars caused by molten splatter.

The Auto-Z feature compensates for electrode wear and resets the Z Axis position at first spark. Setting the depth of cut, retract stroke, and programming all machine settings are accomplished directly on the control.

 

MACHINE DESCRIPTION 

The RK-D 3040 is a fixed table design with the X and Y Axes arranged in a gantry configuration supporting and giving linear motion to the EDM drill head for electrode positioning. This arrangement allows the machine to support heavy work pieces and because the X and Y Axes are under constant conditions and not affected by work piece load, the positioning motion is smooth and accurate. All slides are supported on linear roller ways and use high precision ball screws assuring ease of movement and absolute precision.


The X and Y Axes are equipped with linear bearing ways and precision linear glass scales with one micron resolution. This provides true, closed loop, position feedback for precise part position accuracy. Position readouts are displayed on the control panel giving the operator a constant update on the machine as it operates. The X Axis travel is 15.7" (400mm) and the Y Axis travel is 11.8" (300mm). All information can be displayed in metric or inch units. 

The EDM head, the Z Axis, has an AC Servo drive with a travel of 15.7" (400mm) thus allowing the use of 15.7" (400mm) electrodes for greater economy. The head is mounted on the W Axis with 16.9” (430mm) of travel. This allows adjustments to the open height from the tip of the guide to the table surface of 1.5” (40mm) to 18.5” (470mm).

The precision ground stainless steel worktable is 22.0" (560mm) by 17.3" (440mm) and is divided into four mounting surfaces with a series of M-8 threaded holes. The table also has two movable rails, which are drilled and tapped to accept tooling for quick clamping and locating of the work piece. The table is contained in a stainless steel work tank measuring 34.4” (875mm) wide, 29.5”(750mm) deep, and 5.9” (150mm) high and will accept work pieces up to 770 pounds (350Kg).

The dielectric unit is a self-priming triplex, three-plunger pump, capable of producing 1,200 to 1,400 psi. Average running pressure is 500 to 700 psi. This amount of pressure is required to create a dielectric flow through the rotating tube electrode, offering it stability at the point of EDM, creating optimum flushing conditions.

 

POWER SUPPLY AND MACHINE CONTROL 

Located in a the base of the machine, the power supply is built with the latest state of the art electronics providing high frequency cutting energy to the electrode, with pulse and pause times selectable from 1 to 99 micro seconds and up to 30 average amperes of power. The control is mounted in a pendant station with a 15” LCD and keypad using a Windows Operating System.

Programs are written in absolute or incremental format using an easy conversational text language and can be loaded through a standard Ethernet connection, USB port, or MDI entry from the keypad.

AUTOMATIC ELECTRODE CHANGER (AEC) 

The RK-D 3040 is equipped with a 20 position automatic electrode changer (AEC) to maximize unattended operation. Tooling for the AEC that is included is shown below. The RK-D 3040 keeps track of each electrode, when an electrode is used the machine automatically loads the next one and continues the programmed operation. Electrode sizes from 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm can be utilized in the AEC.

 


AUTOMATIC GUIDE CHANGER 

This equips the machine with a 12 position Automatic Guide Changer (AGC) to maximize unattended operation. Standard with this feature is a set of 12 guide holders which hold a standard guide. The horizontal configuration of this guide changer is beneficial when using extended guides.




5.9” SUBMERSIBLE TILT ROTARY TABLE BY PARKSON (Integrated 4th and 5th Axes)
 

The tilt rotary table presents a low profile with a 5.9" (150 mm) diameter work surface and is specially designed to operate in the environment of the EDM Drilling machine. It is manufactured using stainless steel and can be completely submerged. The rotary table is pre-machined to accept Erowa or System 3R tooling chucks for quick and accurate work piece setups. A flushing port is provided through the center of the rotary table. The axes are fully integrated and movements are programmed from the machine control for quick and simple programming.

LARGE CAPACITY FILTRATION SYSTEM WITH CHILLER AND CONDUCTIVITY CONTROL 

The closed loop filter system consists of a stainless steel reservoir divided into a clean section and dirty section. The reservoir has a 75-gallon (290 liter) capacity which is charged with regular city water, no additives are required. One 0.5 horsepower pump takes the dirty water through the filter cartridge and returns it to the clean section of the reservoir.



The water conductivity level is maintained with the help of deionizing resin in a 3.8 gallon (14.4 liter) fiberglass bottle. A conductivity controller is set with the desired conductivity level if the water conductivity falls below the set point, then a 0.5 horsepower pump takes water from the clean section of the reservoir, through the resin, and back to the reservoir.

This system also includes a 10,000 BTU/hour liquid chiller to maintain the water temperature. This filter system is recommended for applications where water temperature and conductivity need to be maintained at a constant level.

All components of the filter system with chiller have a single electrical connection to the machine.  This eliminates multiple power sources to multiple components. This filter system requires an additional 4.5 KVA of power from the machine.
